What is Career Therapy?
If you are mid-career and need support, consider this kind of therapy.
Years ago, I had a boyfriend who was studying to be a therapist. Getting people to think about their behavior and improve their lives was his speciality. One day, he told me I had a communication problem and that whatever was in my head didn’t match what he heard. I thought my communication style was crystal clear. He would say, “no, you are Krista-clear. You think something in your head, but what comes out of your mouth is only clear to you.”
I may not have liked what he said or how he said it, but he made me think. “Could I be a better communicator?” “Are the words coming out the same way they are in my head?” “Could I be more clear?”
After a beautiful outpouring of text, calls and emails after last week’s article, “The Sprinter Van and My Good-bye to Entry-Level Hollywood, I could tell that some of you thought I was closing my business and starting something new all together. The former flames’s voice whispered in my head, “Are you being Krista-clear again?”
So let me be Krista-clear, crystal clear and clear clear ;-) and give you “Sprinter Part 2: What is Career Therapy?”
I am not leaving LA, retiring or closing my business. I am only completing a career chapter helping students with entry-level Hollywood jobs & internships. I will continue to write articles for this Substack about issues of employment and other interests. My new direction is about helping mid-career entertainment professionals get to the next level via a private coaching program called “Career Therapy.”
What is Career Therapy?
“Career therapy” works like any kind of therapy in that we meet weekly and can work on whatever is blocking you from your next job. Sessions could include: updating a resume/credits/bio, interviewing skills, networking & negotiating strategies, getting an agent or manager, how/when to ask for a promotion etc. I work with people in their 20s, 30s, 40s and beyond who are either full-time employees looking to make a career change or unrepresented creatives (such as on-camera hosts, actors, and writers) who are looking for employment guidance. I’m kind of like a manager who is available on Zoom to support your career with experience and advice (but doesn’t take a 10% fee or screen credit.)
In the spirit of clarity, this is NOT psychological therapy. I am not a licensed therapist and I do not (nor can anyone) guarantee a job, representation or a specific employment outcome. I am however a former WME agent and a first job career coach who has helped 1,000+ people with their careers. I’ve spent tens of thousands of hours working with executives, creatives, agents, managers and more building confidence, relationships and supporting with kindness.

COFFEE WITH KP”- Covid Collection (for Paid Substack Subscribers)
During the Covid lockdowns, my clients couldn’t get informational interviews with industry professionals and ask questions about what they do, how they do it and get advice on how they, aspiring entertainment job seekers could do it too. I hosted 174 episodes and post some of the best replays here. I listen to every episode again before I post and I have to tell you, the advice applies to all ages and every stage of a career. Last week, I put out the episode with UTA Agent Theresa Peters.
It is probably one of the best and most informative sessions I hosted. If you want to work as an agent one day or want to be represented by one, I’d suggest subscribing. It’s only $8/month. If you don’t have the budget, just subscribe for one month, listen to all 31 episodes currently posted then cancel. For the price of an LA Coffee ($8), you’ll get a jolt of encouragement, motivation grounded in practical wisdom from the best professionals in the business.
