The Bible of Networking
And how you can easily meet other young entertainment professionals Oct 15 in Los Angeles
I define networking as the art of making meaningful professional relationships. Networking is not just following someone on social media or putting someone’s contact information in your phone. It’s not transactional nor is it a one time event. It’s a relationship that grows over time. Some people don’t take networking seriously until they need to find a job. The reality, however, is that it’s better to build a foundation before you need a job. This is the premise for Harvey MacKay’s iconic book, “Dig Your Well Before You Are Thirsty.”
While it was written over 30 years ago, the relationship building principles MacKay espouses hold true to this day. Networking is about what you can give, rather than what you can get. Even if you don’t think you have anything to offer, you actually do. My favorite (and easiest) ice breaker is to give a genuine compliment, with no expectation of anything in return.
That’s actually how I met Trevor Romero, founder of Young Entertainment Professionals. Trevor wasn’t in need of a job when he emailed me via LinkedIn 2 years ago, but he wanted to connect. He sent me a message complimenting my business and wanted to see how we could be helpful to one another. Responding to that kind of email was easy. While I focus on private coaching, Trevor is committed to connecting young entertainment professionals in LA & NYC and hosts a lot of events. When I found out he was hosting a mixer in Los Angeles next Sunday October 15, I wanted to spread the word and help him.
If I were just starting out in the entertainment business, I’d read Harvey MacKay’s book this week and practice networking at the Young Entertainment Professionals event next Sunday. Let me know in the comments if you do either.
I'll be going to this with a friend! If anyone wants to go but needs a buddy, I'd be happy to connect :)
How was it?
