Have you ever wondered:

  • How to get the attention of a book publisher (even without representation)

  • What to read daily to prepare you to work in the real world of publishing and/or entertainment?

  • Need tips on being resourceful & standing out in the right ways (even if you are the intern?)

If so, you’ll want to know Lisa Sharkey, Senior Vice President and Director of Creative Development at HarperCollins Publishers Worldwide!

You are getting this newsletter because you want to learn about the entertainment industry from the people who are in it.

“Coffee with KP” is my version of a talkshow/podcast, where industry professionals share their backstory, take questions from my class and offer up advice. Upgrade your subscription ($8/mo) to get access to this episode and all previously released.

Continuing our Coffee with KP: Covid Collection series, today we’re talking to the Senior Vice President and Director of Creative Development at HarperCollins Publishers Worldwide, Lisa Sharkey. I met Lisa through my good friend and TV executive Kary McHoul.

Lisa graduated from Washington University in St. Louis and actually created her own major called Comparative Arts. She started off her career in news by working two different jobs at a St. Louis Public TV station: one as a camera operator and one as a Production Assistant. She eventually worked her way up to become an incredibly accomplished news producer, earning herself two Emmys, a Peabody, and a DuPont Award for her work. Not to mention, she was also the President of Al Roker Entertainment and a Senior Producer at Good Morning America before making the switch to publishing. Now, after more than 20 years in the publishing world, she is behind the publication of more than 75 New York Times bestsellers from authors including Prince Charles, Lindsey Vonn, Jessie James Decker, Tim Tebow, and many more.

In this episode of “Coffee with KP,” you’ll learn about how to get the attention of a book publisher (even without representation,) what to read daily (news and social media accounts you MUST follow,) and tips on being resourceful & standing out in the right ways (even if you are the intern.)
