⚾️ Getting Hired in Hollywood is NOT a numbers game
Submitting your resume to hundreds of job portals without getting a single interview is like swinging a bat and never making contact with the ball. Time to change your approach with this strategy.
Did you hear the story about the boy playing baseball in his backyard? He would toss the ball into the air and announce, “I’m the greatest baseball player in the world,” swing, and miss. He did it a second time. “I’m the greatest baseball player in the world,” took a swing with all of his might, only for the ball to drop to the ground.
On the third attempt, he changed his stance, wiped down his bat, and adjusted his ball cap to block the sun from his eyes. He had iron-clad determination to not just hit the ball, but to hit it over the fence into his neighbor’s yard and become the greatest baseball player in the world! Just like the previous times, the boy tossed the ball into the air, shouted, “I’m the greatest baseball player in the world,” swung his bat, and missed the ball.
The boy understood his reality: He had struck out 3 times.
Yet with great satisfaction, he wiped the sweat off his brow and declared, “Wow, what a pitcher!”
I love this cute story so much because that boy knew how to reframe his story and focus on his strengths. In his mind, the pitches were so good, that he struck out the greatest baseball player in the world! Talk about confidence and the ability to see another, more positive, point of view.
This got me thinking about the Hollywood employment game and the frustration I hear from job seekers who apply to countless job postings without even getting an interview. It’s like throwing up a ball in the air and failing to make contact.
Just because you fail to get an interview, you as a person are NOT a failure. You are probably very disciplined and I applaud your endurance and stick-to-itiveness. In my experience, submitting to as many portals as possible, isn’t helping you. It’s wasting your energy, eroding your confidence and makes it harder for you to get hired.
Years ago, I got a call from “Jenny,” a very bright USC grad who wanted to get a job in entertainment and was interested in my services. After a 20-min call and a few tips, she thought she could do it one her own. I wished her well and expressed confidence that she could.
Nine months later, she called me frustrated. She had applied to every job that looked interesting. After completing 240 jobs application, she only got 2 responses and both were rejections. She didn’t just want my help, she needed it. All of her friends from school had jobs and she thought she was doing everything right. It was obvious to me what wasn’t working. I told her to stop applying to jobs until she learned the H.I.R.E.D. method.
At that time, they only way I taught the H.I.R.E.D method was via private coaching so she signed up right away. **
Our first coaching session was a 3-hour Zoom where we clarified her career vision, crafted her “career story” and made sure to refresh her resume with key elements recruiters are looking for! The next few sessions were spent creating a one-minute video cover letter. When that was done, we went over networking strategies and professional etiquette. I showed her how to effectively meet new people and reconnect others via Linked-In, social media and just picking up the phone. I helped her craft what to say and how to say it succinctly and authentically. As a client, I could open up my network of contacts and make appropriate introductions. I advised her to stop applying to just any job she saw, she needed to be intentional that it was a job she actually wanted and was qualified for. I directed her to an open job that was right for her skill/interest and she applied to her 241st job. She got an interview and knocked it out of park! I’m happy to report, she was hired.
What made the difference? She became intentional in her job search and used my proven H.I.R.E.D. method.
If you have submitted to 100, 200 or even 300 jobs in entertainment with no response, the problem isn’t you, it’s your strategy. It’s time to learn the H.I.R.E.D. method has helped nearly 1,000 college students and recent grads launch their careers in the entertainment business without fancy connections and is available to you today.
While I’m only teaching Get H.I.R.E.D. in Hollywood live to universities and other large groups, you can have access to the replay & workbook by upgrading your subscription to Founding Member for $250 below.
