CWKP Week of Love: Meet Director Geeta Patel
If you want to work as a director, Geeta will inspire you to be your authentic self and go after your dreams with patience, persistence and a lot of heart.
Geeta and her brother Ravi, who both wrote and directed “Meet the Patels” about the not-so-easy journey to find love and get married.
In this replay of Coffee with KP: Covid Collection, we’re chatting with Geeta Patel, director behind hit films and TV series including Disney+’s “Ahsoka,” HBO’s “House of the Dragon,” Netflix’s “Dead to Me” many others.
Geeta earned her degree in Comparative Studies from Duke University and spent her first two years out of college working in finance. She then made the switch to entertainment. She worked as a writer’s assistant for 6 years and made 2 documentaries (one of them being one of my favorites, “Meet the Patels” with her brother Ravi Patel) before big opportunities to direct opened up.
In this episode, you’ll learn what an episodic director does (and how it differs from a director of a pilot,) how to build relationships in entertainment (Geeta wrote over 200 letters requesting informational meetings to people like David E. Kelly, Aaron Sorkin and more…,) and how you can make your own miracles (she got a 2nd Unit directing job on “Sense 8”/Netflix before she was even a member of the DGA.)
Geeta is not only very talented, but she has a beautiful heart. She was a favorite guest speaker in my USC class in 2017 and we were so lucky to be able to record her wisdom with students from all over the country in today’s episode! If you are thinking you want a career as a director, this is a MUST listen episode. If she can do it, so can YOU!
