Many years ago, I sold a TV show based on my young adult adventures in LA as an active Mormon & Hollywood agent. Despite my strict adherence to every Mormon commandment such as; avoiding coffee, tea, R-rated movies, swearing, pre-marital sex, alcohol, etc…. I was accepted into the elite world of Hollywood and worked as a talent agent at the iconic William Morris Agency (now called WME). While my career was on the rise, my life goal of getting married in the Mormon Temple was in the toilet and I was kicked out of my congregation for failing to tie the knot before 30.
Without the support of my familiar church community, I had to learn how to be “normal” outside the confines of my culture. While most people had their coming of age in high school, I experienced adolescence in my 30s and Hollywood was the backdrop. It was a wild ride, but not in the ways one might expect.
It’s my intention with this Substack to explore the themes from my life in the Hollywood vortex to help anyone get ahead in the notoriously tough to break into entertainment business while learning to embrace being unique!
And if entertainment isn’t your jam, my advice will apply to any industry where you’ll need to stand up and stand out with a “Grade A” resume, plus excellent interviewing and natural networking skills. I’ll also throw in hard earned life advice (dating, living outside of cultural expectations, therapy). I had the privilege of working with Mark Cuban, Ryan Seacrest and other Hollywood heavyweights by using the techniques to get hired that I will share with you dear reader. I hope my Substack delights and inspires you to discover your own star power and get hired in the job perfect for you.
And of course, if you have any questions, I’d love to hear from you!
Hugs, xoxo KP
